Our Narratives Evolving (ONE) provides incarcerated men at Moose Lake Prison with a platform to share their public narratives. We strongly believe in the transformative power of storytelling and strive to create a safe and inclusive space for individuals to express their experiences and perspectives.
Purpose of ONE
We recognize the significance of sharing personal stories to prevent vulnerable groups from engaging in criminal activities. During our meetings, we create a safe and inclusive environment for program participants to openly share their stories and shed light on the factors that influenced their incarcerated status. The audience has the opportunity to engage with participants including asking questions and responding to their narratives. We understand the importance of tailoring our language and message to the specific audience we are addressing. For vulnerable students, our aim is to discourage them from adopting a lifestyle that promotes violence.
By sharing real-life experiences and highlighting the consequences of criminal activities, we hope to inspire them to make positive choices and pursue a different path. Simultaneously, we strive to humanize individuals with a criminal history. By providing a platform for their stories to be heard, we aim to challenge stereotypes and foster empathy and understanding. Through these conversations, we believe in the power of breaking down barriers and promoting a more compassionate society. We firmly believe that by sharing stories and engaging in meaningful dialogue, we can make a difference
Public Achievement
ONE is deeply influenced by the philosophy of Public Achievement. Public Achievement focuses on developing leadership skills, fostering collaboration, and promoting social justice. Through a combination of classroom learning and hands-on experiences, participants learn about democratic principles, community organizing, and problem-solving.
Public Achievement encourages young people to identify issues that matter to them and work towards finding solutions. It emphasizes the importance of active citizenship, where individuals take responsibility for addressing social problems and creating a more equitable society. By providing training, support, and resources, Public Achievement equips young people with the tools they need to make a difference. It encourages them to engage with diverse perspectives, build relationships, and develop the confidence to take action.
Community for Working Learning (CWL)
ONE was established as an extension of CWL with the aim of addressing the challenges faced by individuals with criminal convictions. Upon release, these individuals encounter numerous limitations and barriers that have far-reaching consequences. Successful reintegration requires social rehabilitation from the time of arrest until post-release. One of the main issues with prison is its isolation from the outside world, creating a separate society. Environmental factors within prisons often hinder rehabilitation, causing correctional residents to disconnect from their pre-incarceration lives. Additionally, a lack of acceptance into the community further complicates the transition after release, leading to difficulties in adapting to society and an increased risk of recidivism. To improve reentry outcomes, it is crucial to reevaluate our perceptions of individuals with a criminal history. Despite the severity of their offense, they face significant challenges and stigmatization due to their criminal records. Community members play a vital role in facilitating the reintegration of these individuals.
The Community for Work and Learning aims to shed light on the struggles of correctional residents by providing a platform for discussing the implications of incarceration and fostering dialogue with the community. In order to achieve successful reintegration, community members must be open to accepting and supporting individuals transitioning back into society. Public Narratives serve as a means to amplify diverse voices and foster a sense of community through storytelling, emphasizing the importance of understanding and empathy in the process of reintegration.
